Windfall Energy enables flat-owners and renters to benefit from the clean-energy transition by taking control of their electricity usage.

Why

Energy bills are increasing for everyone. If you live in a big house with a roof you can install solar panels or put a big battery in the garage to capture cheaper off-peak energy which often comes from abundant amounts of wind energy which is otherwise wasted.

If you’re a renter or live in a flat there’s not much you can do to get control of your energy bills.

This means a lot of people are being left behind in the green transition. Over two million homes in London alone, millions more in the UK, and over a hundred million in Europe.

What

People in flats can’t practically generate their own electricity via solar panels. But by using a home battery they can decouple when energy is purchased from when it is used.

The Windfall Battery does exactly that. It monitors the electricity on the grid for price and carbon intensity and charges up at the optimum times. Then, when everyone else is cooking dinner with expensive peak electricity, the battery powers the house with cheap and green stored energy.

Who

Ashley and Rob met at a Green IoT Meetup, and were both looking for ways to use their skills and experience to have a positive impact on the climate crisis. They shared a frustration that it’s difficult to make a difference to your energy consumption when you live in a flat.

After spending time researching solutions, and visiting Germany to understand the emerging Balkonkraftwerk movement, it became clear that there was a wide gap in the market for products designed specifically with this audience in mind.
